The biggest thing holding you back from a promotion

After coaching sales reps to do over $20 Million over the last 5 years, the number one factor holding back average reps from being good, and great reps from being the best is their egos.

Usually the better reps have a bigger problem with this than the struggling ones because when you really suck, it’s pretty hard to deny that you just aren’t doing well. When you are the best on your team, you’re beating quotas each month, and you feel that you are exactly where you need to be, that’s when you begin to lose. The craziest thing about this is that the numbers will say otherwise. On paper, to you and your colleagues, you are a rockstar. Who the hell am I to tell you otherwise?

The fact of the matter is that if you are not growing, you’re dying.

You may be the best at your company or have 20 years of experience, but the real question isn’t how well are you doing where you are. It’s how well are you doing compared to your potential and that of everybody else in the market?

How does this all tie back to ego?
On the spectrum of greatness where 0% means you are the worst sales rep in the world and 100% meaning you are the absolute greatest, most reps between 25% and 90% face a common obstacle. They are good enough to know that they have potential, but they think that if they continue to stick to what they are doing, they will eventually get where they wish to go (if they even know where that is).

This is what we call living in mediocrity.

The problem with this mentality is that in order to achieve the lofty goals you have set for yourself to someday accomplish, you need to become a different person. You need to totally transform who you are.

How do I know this is 100% true? If I was wrong, then you would have already achieved those goals as the person you are now.

To tell yourself that you are going to give it another 6 months and see what happens is a massive waste of your own time and money. To continue doing the same thing over and over expecting to eventually get a different result is the definition of insanity.

Any fool can learn from their own mistakes. True geniuses choose to learn from the mistakes of others.
